Impressionist landscapes and cityscapes
This is the back of the Pantheon, the Roman temple to all of the gods. It was consecrated as a church, Santa Maria Rotunda (or Chubby Saint Mary’s). The obelisk is from ancient Egypt and is mounted on a statue of an elephant by the great Baroque sculptor, Bernini. The courtyard is in front of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, or Saint Mary on top of Minerva.

This is the Palace of Monserrate, a quinta (estate) in Sintra, Portugal. It is Victorian Gothic and spectacular inside. Sintra is a beautiful town near Lisbon and is surrounded by palaces and country houses. Susan and I have visited Sintra several times and we particularly love Victorian Gothic since we live in a Victorian Gothic cottage ourselves.

Susan and I were driving up the Garden State Parkway from Cape May when I saw this. A huge, dark, threatening, cloud was hanging over the wetlands that separate Wildwood from the mainland of New Jersey. I went home and stretched a huge canvas to suit the enormous scene.

This is where the Emperor Constantine is said to have seen a vision of a fiery cross in the sky. After his victory, he tolerated, then required Christianity as the state religion. Amazingly, the Roman bridge is still there.

A few years ago, Cape May’s not-for-profit organization, MAC, had an exhibit about the storms that have struck the town through history. They asked painters to send in pictures on the theme. This was my submission. Clearly, it owes a great debt to Hokusai’s Great Wave – but in a Western, Impressionist style. I really like its graphic strength, the many blue colors, and the threatening, night-time, atmosphere.

This is a small painting that I did years ago of the Cape May wetlands between Wildwood and the mainland of New Jersey. The mud flats in the foreground were next to Ocean Drive and the bunch of trees on the horizon are adjacent to the banks along route 47.
I put the horizon very high to try to capture the vastness and flatness of the wetlands in a small canvas. The color is laid on in washes to reproduce the beige and green of early spring.
